Because the inhabitants had eyes
in their bellies.

Because the wind
no longer heard them.

Because their hands
were all shriveled.

Because the sea
fell silent.

Because their tongues
turned to stone.

Because the tall grasses
refused to grow.

Because on their fine doors
the locks were rusted.

Because the fire
burned up all the keys.
